Nieuw Statendam Dedication with Oprah Winfrey

"On February 3, 2019, our newest Pinnacle-class ship, Nieuw Statendam, was dedicated by her godmother, Ms. Oprah Winfrey. Watch the festive private ceremony by clicking on the video below. Cruising the Caribbean for her inaugural season, Nieuw Statendam will then cruise Europe for summer 2019.”

Overview

• Web broadcast of a live event taking place inside the theater space inside the cruise ship, with a go-live time of only hours after the ship docks into port
• Build a control room at the port that can be quickly disconnected and reconnected from the ship via fiber optic trunk
• Interface ship’s theater control and show running system with external port-based control room for comms, genlock, and bidirectional feeds between the ship and streaming control room
• Incorporate an external camera view of the ship’s bow to capture the traditional champagne bottle christening
• Install and calibrate a long-range parabolic microphone in order to capture the actual sound of the champagne bottle break for the live broadcast, and compensate for video/audio delay in real-time
• Blackmagic workflow including switcher, router, cameras, playback, and recording
• Tech scout conducted onsite in Florida months prior to the show in order to comprehensively design a resilient, flexible control room with multiple layers of redundancy throughout each workflow (power, signal, outbound Internet, etc.)
• Highlight clips from the live program were captured and curated in near real-time, with delivery to client within 2 hours of the event, for immediate release to press.

For Nieuw Statendam’s dedication, Punch Drunk’s founder and creative director Jacob Stone, along with 13 team members, designed a solution to solve three major hurdles, incorporating Blackmagic products for their ease of use, image quality and portability.

Deceptively straightforward, the project involved production challenges that Punch Drunk needed to prepare for well in advance. But, as specialists in multi camera live broadcast, the company is familiar with the changeable nature of live events.
